Wild Asparagus Part 2 - Idaho Produce
Today was a great success when it comes to asparagus picking! We spent only about 45 minutes, walked a square half mile and found about a half a grocery sack full of asparagus in all shapes and sizes. For those of you who are interested in asparagus hunting here is a picture of what you are looking for! The photo on the left is what asparagus looks after time. These plants are dried up from last year. This is a good spot to look because the new stalks will grow up through the middle of this group. After a while it really becomes a game to see who can spot the slender stalks first!
What a treat! We can't wait to grill these suckers up for dinner!
I just learned about foraging for asparagus in these parts and quickly added it to my bucket list. I went out for the first time tonight, but didn't find anything. Do have any tips? Is it too late in the season? I'm in the Rexburg/Lyman/Archer area. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHello there! I think you are still good on time and usually if you find some larger asparagus stalks that have seeded out you can find some good ones hiding underneath and around those. I haven't even looked for asparagus in that area but I'm assuming it would be the same as around Twin Falls. It tends to grow around ditch banks and canals so if you can get permission from a farmer walk along their canal or if you don't know a farmer just walk along the roadside next to a field. It's a great idea too to watch out in a couple of months to see all of the grown out asparagus and make a note of it to look there the next year! I hope you can find some!
Deletedo you know of any good places around canyon and ada county for asparagus hunting?
