Idaho Counties License Plate Codes

If you are driving through Idaho on our smile shaped I-84, cruising along at a safe 75mph, there may come a long desolate stretch, say somewhere between Glenns Ferry and Mountain Home, when you realized there isn't much to see. At that point you might notice something strange...Something on every Idaho license plate that passes you...It's a number and a letter, some sort of strange Idaho lingo. If you're from Idaho, you know exactly what it means and chances are you know almost all of these codes. I'm talking about Idaho's county codes on our license plates.

Being a proud Twin Falls native I have always sported the classy "2T" on my plates and I am accustom to seeing a variety of plate codes like a gas guzzling truck with "2J" - Jerome, a "BSU Alum" sticker boasting "1A" - Boise, and sometimes even parked at our whole foods store, a Subaru with "5B" - Blaine.
Every once in a while I still catch an odd ball like "7C' - Custer, or "2F" - Fremont, where I stop and have to sing the wonderful county code song that my elementary school teacher taught us. Sing this song once over and you'll know which county "6C" corresponds with. Now, if you aren't from Idaho or if you simply aren't familiar with the song I encourage you to give it a try. The tune is simple and I'm sure you've heard it before: "One little, two little, three little Indians...". Hum that tune but replace the words with the following county names:

Ada Adams Bannock Bear Lake,
Benewah Bingham Blaine Boise,
Bonner Bonneville Boundary Butte,
Camas Canyon Caribou,
Cassia Clark Clearwater Custer,
Elmore Franklin Fremont Gem,
Gooding Idaho Jefferson Jerome,
Kootenai Latah Lemhi,
Lewis Lincoln Madison Minidoka,
Nez Perce Oneida Owyhee Payette,
Power Shoshone Teton Twin Falls,
Valley annnnnnd Washington

What code do you proudly display on your license?

  1. How about matching the codes to match the county (1B...Bannock), etc.
